People of Purpose

Connecting people to their unique human experience through Purpose.

Dec 7, 2019

Jesse Gould, Founder of Heroic Hearts Project, was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico and grew up in New Smyrna Beach, FL.  In 2009, he graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Economics. After working in investment banking for a short time he enlisted in the Army and became an Airborne Ranger for four years and three combat deployments. Most recently, he worked in finance in Tampa, FL.  After struggling with severe anxiety for many years, he finally decided to go to an ayahuasca retreat which has had a profoundly positive effect on his anxiety and daily life. During the week-long retreat, he instantly saw the healing potential of the drink and knew that it could be a powerful tool in healing the mental struggles of his fellow veterans. This experience inspired him to found Heroic Hearts Project, an organization that connects veterans in need of healing with ayahuasca therapy.  Since its founding, Heroic Hearts Project has quickly become one of the most prominent veteran voices pushing for psychedelic based therapies. Listen as we talk about:

  • "When things are going wrong, you want to control them and fix them and then almost takes a skill set to just be fine with things that you can't control and let them go and focus on things you can control."
  • "I have a vision towards the end that said if I knew exactly what was gonna happen, if I knew the exact curve path, it just put me right back into this depressive state. Because you need the challenge. You need the stimulation to keep entertained. If you know everything, that leads to boredom."
  • "Bring it back to the present. Just Enjoy the day to day, enjoy the struggles, enjoy the challenge of life and not necessarily knowing everything that's going to happen."
  • "Mental health, in general, is a lifestyle. It's not just you are now healthy, you have to work towards it."
  • "I am doing this for different reasons, I am not what I'm fearing myself to be."
  • The importance of community and connection with each other
  • Practicing of tapping into and listening to the brain and emotions and what makes it effective
  • Doing everything you can to maximize the present on a daily basis
